Project Overview

The Youth Governance and Participatory Project (YGPP) was implemented across the three senatorial districts of Delta State with support from the Nigeria Youth Futures Fund (NYFF) and LEAP Africa. This initiative was designed to strengthen youth participation in governance structures and democratic processes at the state and community levels.

Project Objectives

The overarching goal of the project was to promote inclusive governance by equipping young people—aged 18 to 35—with the knowledge, skills, and platforms needed to meaningfully engage in civic life. The project sought to:

  • Increase youth awareness of governance processes.

  • Provide training and mentorship on civic engagement.

  • Enhance youth influence in policy dialogue and decision-making.

  • Promote accountability among public office holders.

Key Activities and Outcomes

Through a strategic mix of capacity-building workshops, stakeholder engagement, and mentorship sessions, YGPP achieved the following:

  • Successfully trained a diverse group of young leaders from all three senatorial zones on advocacy, leadership, policy engagement, and accountability.

  • Fostered a network of youth advocates committed to community organizing and civic action.

  • Created multiple entry points for youth to participate in governance, including town hall meetings, policy forums, and direct engagements with elected officials.

  • Amplified youth voices in discussions on public service delivery, transparency, and democratic development.

Participant Profile

The training sessions attracted a vibrant and diverse group of young change-makers—many already active in civic and social impact spaces. Participants demonstrated a strong interest in enhancing their advocacy skills and deepening their understanding of governance, particularly in relation to their roles as citizens and future leaders.
